How to learn English

When it comes to the learning of English, it seems that everyone has his or her own opinions or tactics. As for me, I never offer to teach fish to swim. I do, however, like to share some of my learning experiences with everyone.

To begin with, spark an interest. What is the purpose of learning English? Is it just for the sake of the exam? Or is it for the fun of learning a foreign language? As a matter of fact, English is an asset that you will benefit from throughout your life; not to mention, the world is rapidly turning English into the lingua franca of our time. Even though, learning doesn't have to be serious and boring, it can be both enjoyable and exciting. Take reading for example, when you read, it is important that the content you read interests you. Take time to find resources that are interesting to read and not too complicated as well. Keep yourself motivated. As far as I am concerned, I have been fascinated by forensic science and detective stories; therefore, I've read a lot of books about them. I can kill at least two birds with one stone: I improve my command of English and on top of that I enjoy the entire reading process and can't wait to finish up the whole book. Although these books are usually best sellers and may not be academic enough, still, that's how I keep reading one novel after another. To my surprise, I even have the chance to translate some of my favorite detective and crime writers' books into Chinese.

On the other hand, you might have known many grammar concepts like the tenses, the passive and so on. Try to change your way of speaking and expressing the same idea with different sentence structures and phrases. By doing so, you can reinforce you memory and increase the language flexibility. Or when you learn new vocabulary, use them in essays or conversations to establish the associations necessary for long-term memory. In the meanwhile, regard tests as a means of evaluating how much English you have learned so far. Test is a way of examining and assessing the ability of using English. People may feel great anxiety for the test, for example, the GEPT; however, why not turning these negative thoughts into positive ideas?

To sum up, no matter how many ways I have mentioned above, they all boil down to one very simple fact: you can only learn yourself. I don't think there are any special study techniques. It just takes consistent work to be successful. Any learning process takes place in your head and no else where. Try various ways and methods to speed up your learning process. In addition, only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercise can you really improve English ability. As an old proverb goes, "Practice makes perfect." Learning a language is like practicing a sport; the more you train and practice the better chances you will get the trophy. There is no short cut in achieving a good command of the English language. It is dogged that does it. Hopefully, everyone can lift his or her English ability to a new level.
